I’m a fantasy writer but my work is very much inspired by both real world mythology – including Old English legends, Norse Myths, Celtic folklore, European and World mythology – and the classics of fantasy by writers such as J R R Tolkien, Robert E Howard, Mervyn Peake and Lord Dunsany. Don’t worry, I’m not totally stuck in the past! I also have a strong regard for more modern fantasy writers like Tad Williams, Robin Hobb, George R R Martin, Robert Jordan and Brandon Sanderson. This website is therefore dedicated to celebrating worlds of fantasy, folklore, myth and legend from every era and every corner of the world.

Welcome Message
Welcome to my blog!
I'm a fantasy writer and on this site you'll not only find samples of my work but also articles concerning folklore, myth and legend, reviews of movies, books and graphic novels and much else besides (including the occasional short story - you lucky people!).
Go to the ‘Novels’ section of this website for more information and to read free samples of my longer fiction. Excerpts from my short fiction appear in the 'Short Stories' section of this website.
The 'Blogroll' below contains links to lots of other fantasy and sci-fi websites and the 'Writer Links' section of this site will take you to the websites of other authors whose work I admire.
If you like what you see on here don't forget that you can follow me on Facebook and Twitter too by clicking on one of the links below!

Another Road to Middle Earth
Fifty years after its first publication, The Lord of the Rings found a new and even larger audience in a new medium, the three films directed by Peter Jackson and released in successive years 2001–2003. These are some of the most successful films ever made. The three between them had taken some £1,279 million at the […]

After the King: Tolkien’s heirs
It is something of a relief, having looked last month at his critics, to turn this time to Tolkien’s many admirers. It would not be true to say that there was no such thing as epic fantasy before Tolkien: there was a tradition of English and Irish writers before him, such as E R Eddison and […]

Tolkien: The Monsters and the Critics
“This is not a work that many adults will read right through more than once.” With these words the anonymous reviewer for the Times Literary Supplement (25 November 1955) summed up his judgment of J R R Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings. It must have seemed a pretty safe prophecy at the time, for of […]

The Wolf in the Attic
1920s Oxford: home to C S Lewis, J R R Tolkien and, in Paul Kearney’s novel The Wolf in the Attic, Anna Francis, a young Greek girl looking to escape the grim reality of her new life. The night they cross paths, none suspect the fantastic world at work all around them. Anna lives in a […]

Of Wood Woses and Wild Men
In The Lord of the Rings a strange and primitive folk named the Woses came to aid the men of Gondor in breaking the siege of Minas Tirith. These wild woodland people lived in the ancient forest of Druadan, below the White Mountains. In form they were weather-worn, short-legged, thick-armed and stumpy-bodied and they knew wood-craft […]

Thanks so much for subscribing, however you do realize that we write about two completely different worlds of fantasy. The only other thing that we have in common is that I too have spent time in England; London, Ipswich, Clacton-on-sea-, et al, and have also travelled to over 10 countries. I enjoy reading some of what you write about, but other than that, my passion has always been and remains as such to this day; Sports.
I do hope you enjoy reading our blog and hope, if you feel passionate about sports as well, that you will feel compelled to comment from time to time.
Continued success with your blog (which I must say I found extremely interesting).

Thanks for your support!
How lovely to find your blog. I haven’t read fantasy for a while. Time to return to it. A vista of plenty…
Thanks and welcome!
Thank you so much for following my blog! You seem to have built a really great resource here, and I love how detailed all of your articles are. I’m looking forward to poking around your posts and your writing samples. =)
Thanks, enjoy!
Thank you for following my new blog! I’m looking forward to reading more of your posts and samples. I used to read a lot of fantasy but moved more to science fiction and mainstream over the last few years. But your stories sound intriguing!
Thanks and welcome 🙂
Thanks for following — I tend towards science fiction these days, but fantasy is where I got my start and I’m a huge fan of guys like Terry Brooks, Raymond Feist, and more recently, Brandon Sanderson. it’s obvious you put a lot of work into your site and I look forward to poking around and checking out your stories.
Thanks for your support
Hey thanks for following. 🙂 you have a nice blog here.
Much appreciated 🙂
Hello Ashsilverlock! Thank you for subscribing to my blog. I am really glad I stumbled upon your work – I love myths and fantastic tales so I will be frequenting your site 😀
Thanks so much!
Thank you for following and liking my stuff! I was a little worried that the historical details/the Celtic mythology was wrong, due to my lack of knowledge of that time period, so to have someone like it is great.
I hope to get the chance to check out some more of your stuff later, but time won’t permit to at the moment.
Welcome on board!
Thanks! 🙂
I listed you as one of my fifteen recently found blogs in my acceptance of the Versatile Blogger Award – thus giving you the award, too. I view it as an opportunity to let people know about blogs they might not have found otherwise. And your blog is one I definitely enjoy following. Keep up the great work!
Thanks, the feeling is mutual 🙂
Thanks for following my blog! I’m looking forward to exploring yours!
Good to hear from you!
Very interesting site. My own favorite diversion is alternative history (especially set in the ancient world), but I’ll keep an eye on your site since I love the work of C.S. Lewis and Tolkien as well!
Welcome!
Thank you for following. I REALLY like the blog and the idea behind it. Fantasy has always fascinated me.
Thanks, me too 🙂
Thank you for following! Following you back 🙂

Thank you for subscribing to my art blog. I’m looking forward to reading your blog, as it seems we both have an interest in similar authors.
Hello, thanks 🙂
Thanks for following my blog. I roamed around your blog and really enjoyed it. I enjoy science fiction and fantasy and look forward to reading more of your writings.
Greetings!
Thank you for following my blog. I have had a quick glance around yours and it looks really interesting and am looking forward to reading more.
I will have to bookmark it to read later as today is Christmas Eve and I am a little busy!! 🙂
Hope you enjoy it!
Hey, thanks for following my blog! I’ve never seen a blog like yours before, it’s excellent to learn more about fantasy in detail 🙂 P.s. loving you banner picture at the top! 🙂
Thanks a lot 🙂
Thank you for following my blog! As I am a devotee of the kind of epic fantasy that you write (I am now finally nearing the end of the last book in the Eragon cycle, and am strangely disappointed in some particulars of the conclusion; perhaps the last twenty pages will sort it out), I am honored that you liked what you read. Since this is the time of year when I prepare my major book order, I am adding White Planet to my list. You could not have come along at a better time.
Much obliged 🙂
Tks very much for following and like my blog. Will check your stories, they sounds interesting 🙂
Thanks, hope you enjoy yourself!
Thanks so much for the “like” on my blog. Your’s looks very interesting and I’m looking forward to reading more of your writing!
Let me know what you think!
Nice blog. I am a fan of science fiction and fantasy. I would be interested to know what you think of author Jacqueline Carey. I love the Kushiel Series. I will definitely visit your blog again and spend some time reading. Thanks for stopping in to look at my blog.
It’s on my reading list but I just never seem to get round to it – will get back to you!
You sound like an interesting writer. I’ll be sure to check in now and again. 🙂
See you ’round 🙂
Well, this is a nice thing to find after getting a follow :3.
Incidentally, you mention some more modern authors that also use mythology as a place to draw inspiration from but I didn’t see my personal favorite mentioned and I was wondering if you’d ever read any of his work. He’s David Eddings, who wrote the Belgariad and Malorean cycles, both of which are patterned after traditional cyclical myths.
^^^ what Laurien said.
Thanks for that!
I’ve read almost all of Eddings’ books as I find them massively readable and I think he’s a terrific writer. I’m not sure how groundbreaking he is, however, which is the only reason I haven’t mentioned him on the site so far 🙂
Just wanted to say ‘hi!’ and thanks for following my blog last week! 🙂
Hi to you too!
Hi, Ash ~ Thanks for liking my article ~ I’ve subscribed to your blog now, it sounds interesting. 🙂

Thanks for the follow! The only mythical book I have reviewed so far is Eragon but I do like Tolkien’s Hobbit and CS Lewis. If you ever want to suggest a book or have a review on my website just let me know! Liked your posts. Will enjoy a nosey!

Hello! Thanks for the “like” and the “follow.” I’ve enjoyed reading around your blog and look forward to future posts. I have to see if you’ve written about any of the Jane Austen / zombie, Henry VIII / wolfman mash-up books. I just read Queen Victoria: Demon Hunter and am still up in the air about it …
Thanks and those are some great books! I tend to avoid out-and-out horror, horror comedies and other horror sub-genres on this site but you might want to check out the excellent Ghost Cities blog for all of that kind of thing

Hi, I wanted to say thank you for following my blog! I really appreciate it. I always love meeting fellow writers and I look forward to checking out your work! All the best to you in the future! 🙂
Thanks, love meeting fellow writers too!
Thanks for following! I”m reading LOTR right now (again). My kids and I watch the extended version every time someone gets sick or every 4 months if we’re on a well streak. : ) I am happy to say that when in England, I went to a bar that Tolkien and C.S. Lewis patronized for their long discussions about their writing. It was quite a thrill! I’m also into interior fantasy, such as exhibited in Jane Eyre. Nice to meet you!
Thanks! I think I may have visited the same bar one time too…
Thanks for dropping by my blog! Your projects look very interesting and I can’t wait to get some time to look over the samples you have posted.
Thanks for visiting my blog and deciding to follow! Yours is quite fascinating. My world is all about fantasy. More the tennis ball variety, but I think i might like to visit your place and see more of your world.
